What are the differences between natural grass and artificial grass?
Grass and artificial grass… both are green, but there are huge differences between these grass type. You can imagine that artificial grass requires less maintenance than normal grass, but that’s not all.
Costs of grass type and artificial grass
The artificial grass cost in the beginning is higher than of natural grass (especially if you sow the grass yourself). Your investment in artificial grass is for a minimum of 10 years. After the initial year, you will have no further costs. This is not the case with natural grass. Every year you will make costs for watering, fertilising and sowing. Usually a natural grass lawn in an average household does not last for 10 years and will be replaced after a couple of years. When comparing the two, it is important to take these additional costs into account as well.
Whichever type of artificial grass you choose, we recommend you to always use sand fill (except for indoor use). After all, the lifetime of artificial grass can be extended thanks to sand.
Differences in use
At first sight, natural grass and artificial grass look the same. But the main difference is that the look of artificial turf will not be your only reason to buy it. With grass you always have to be careful, otherwise it will die or become barren and dry. This is no problem with artificial grass. No matter how often you use your lawn, the grass will remain green.
After rainfall, a natural grass lawn will become a muddy mess. This is not the case with artificial grass. The water will be drained quickly and kids can play on the lawn immediately. No dirty clothes or muddy feet in your house.
Please do take into account that using artificial grass will show after a while. Used artificial lawn looks different from new artificial grass, but that is only logical. What the artificial grass will look like after a couple of years depends on the type of grass you have chosen.
More pros and cons
- Grass feels cooler in summer than artificial grass.
- In summer and with dry weather, artificial grass can become static. You can resolve this by spraying your artificial lawn with a hose.
- Even in artificial lawns, moss can start to grow in shaded areas. Fortunately, this can be removed easily. In a lawn of natural grass, moss kills the grass. This is not the case with artificial grass. Your artificial lawn will be as good as new once you have removed the moss.
