Properties
- The sand keeps the grass fibres upright
- Protects the backing
- Provides additional weight and stability
- Makes artificial grass look more natural
- Sand has a fire-retardant effect
- Clean and natural material
Long-blade artificial grass, like Royal Grass® Exclusive and Velvet, is strewn with a filler. Royal Grass® uses exclusively (natural) sand for this purpose. The sand serves to weigh down the artificial grass mat. It provides stability and protects the backing during use. This added weight keeps the artificial turf firmly in place and prevents wrinkles or creases from developing during use. The sand also supports the artificial grass fibres and ensures that they remain upright. Another advantage of the sand fill is that it acts as a fire retardant, for example, if the barbecue should topple over onto the grass.
The visual value of the sand is that it increases the natural appearance. Royal Grass® can (optionally) supply special earth-brown sand for the top-layer.
Filler sand should not be confused with ‘earth’. It is specifically developed for this purpose and sand-strewn artificial grass makes a low-maintenance and clean surface. The sand does not contain any organic material and does not therefore constitute soil in which weeds can grow. The sand does not retain moisture and will not therefore become muddy when wet. The grass is soon dry and clean again after it has rained. The sand is ‘heavy’ – it will not blow away and the leaching through the artificial grass mat is minimal.
